Alternative Family Photo Album

2019, publication design

For decades photographs have held a value of considerable importance within the circle of my family, where each household owns a rather large amount of them.
Ever since I was a child I loved browsing through the old photographs, always questioning the story foregoing what was captured in the moment the photograph was being taken.

Alternative Family Photo Album is a self-initiated project that seeks to showcase my subjective perception and interpretation of the essence of my family through the selection of visually edited photographic material. It showcases a way of storing and preserving an extensive amount of family photographs while presenting them as a consciously curated collection.

The original intention of the project was to create a rather complete as well as complex photo album of my entire family using simple binding techniques, however, the development process and extended photographic research of my family archive considerably impacted the final form of the project, resulting in three individual books, introductory cards, poster and a foldable cover which also functions as protective packaging for the contained printed material.

Constructing the visual language of the publication this way allowed for the authentic capturing and presentation of the memories and feelings the selected photographic pieces evoke in me while connecting the two branches of my family.

The selected colour palette used when creating the collages was consciously adapted to the periods when the photographs were captured, which completes the overall retro look of the publication and so authentically communicates the perception of my family from my subjective perspective.
